Choosing Fortis Mumbai for Bariatric Surgery was the Best Decision of my Life - Say's Amo from Africa
My name is Amo. I live in Africa.
I’ve always been overweight. I’ve always struggled with my weight. I was a chubby child. So growing up was difficult at times because I also have a condition which is asthma.
I always felt like I was a little bit on the outside because I wasn’t like everyone else. It was hard. It felt like I was an outsider. Being overweight was always difficult because I never felt like I was like everyone else. I always felt a little bit different and unique. So sometimes I felt like I was alone or I just didn’t fit in. I have been seriously considering bariatric surgery for over 10 years, however kept telling myself that I can do this, I can lose the weight on my own. This mindset allowed me to stay heavy for 10 years too long. I have tried many ways to shed the weight but was unable to take more than 20 pounds off. My body was starting to hurt more, 2 bulging disks and sore knees and a weight of 280 kept me from participating in life. I also have no thyroid due to Hashimotos Disease and a very large goiter; this hindered my weight loss as well. My niece had Bariatric surgery (VSG) surgery 2 years ago. I was able to see how it helped her so much and how she began to start living her life again. She ate smaller meals more often and continued to lose weight and become healthy.
This year I turned 50 and I was determined it would be a fresh start for me. I did not want to go into my middle years with the terrible thought of this disease hanging over me and also worrying about my weight, I knew I had to do something about it. My dad died a few years ago after suffering from heart disease and diabetes which are both weight-related. I didn’t want the same problems as him and I knew they could be avoided. I felt it was now or never. But I knew it was a big decision. I read up on gastric bands and went on websites and forums and the name that kept coming up time and again was Fortis Mumbai for bariatric surgery. When I contacted them I was responded in great detail about why I would want the surgery and we discussed everything and what a challenge a gastric band would be and all the risks and the benefits.
I chose Fortis Hospital in India as having the surgery done at home in Africa required two or more years of jumping through hoops. Two of my girlfriends also went and had the surgery with me. All three of us would not recommend the hospital where we had it done. I flew to India and there I was picked up at the airport, and taken to the Marriot. A very nice hotel in India. Monday, I was picked up at the hotel and taken to Fortis hospital. I was treated like royalty.
After I woke up from surgery, within a half hour, I was walking the halls with a very little pain. Two days later in afternoon, I was taken back to the hotel, and on four days after taken back to Africa.
I hit my goal before December. It has now been over 6 months since my surgery. I no longer snore, my allergies are almost non-existent, and my bad knee is not as painful. I have a new wardrobe and can wear clothes I have not worn in 10 years.
